BNEF Tier-1 is the most-referenced bankability signal in solar procurement — and the most misunderstood. It measures financial bankability, not quality. Here's the correct way to interpret it.

not pay-to-play

What BNEF Tier-1 actually requires

  • 6 or more project references at ≥1.5 MW in the last 2 years
  • Non-recourse project finance from six different banks in six different countries
  • Publicly disclosed manufacturer name on each project
  • Vertical integration is NOT required (many Tier-1 brands OEM cells)
Tier-1 ≠ quality

BNEF Tier-1 is financial bankability. For technical quality, cross-reference PVEL top-performer status. For long-term degradation, look at DNV product qualification data.

Frequently asked questions

QIs Tier-1 the same as bankable for US tax equity?

It's necessary but not sufficient. US tax-equity lenders maintain their own approved lists which are tighter than BNEF's.
