Importing Chinese solar into India: FAQ

Procurement, certification, and logistics questions answered.

QHow does the ALMM list affect Chinese module imports?

ALMM (Approved List of Models and Manufacturers) restricts government-procured and net-metered projects to listed models. Open-access and private C&I projects can still freely import Chinese modules paying the 40% Basic Customs Duty.

QWhat is the effective landed cost of a Chinese module in India?

$0.118 CIF + 40% BCD + 18% IGST + clearing fees pushes landed cost to roughly $0.21/W for a 550W TOPCon panel — still competitive against domestic premium pricing for many DC-side projects.

QAre Chinese cells subject to the same duties?

Imported cells face a lower 20% BCD, which is why several Indian manufacturers (Waaree, Adani, Tata) import Chinese cells and assemble modules domestically for ALMM-eligible sale.
